BOONVILLE - Starmount knocked off Yadkin County rival Forbush last week to remain in the hunt in the Mountain Valley Conference race.

The Lady Rams captured four singles victories en route to the 6-3 win to keep pace in the conference standings.

Ashley Griffin, Miracle Walters and Jordan Shore cruised to singles wins, while Kristin Nicks battled to a 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 triumph in the No. 6 match.

Deanna Wilkes knocked off Heaven Walters 7-5, 6-1 in a hard-fought, back-and-forth match on the first court with Charly McCormick topping Madison McClellan 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles play, Heaven Walters and Griffin won comfortably, 8-2, while Shore and Miracle Walters doubled up their opponent 8-4 to seal the win. Forbush edged McClellan/Nicks 9-7 in the final doubles match.

With the win, Starmount improved to 9-5 on the season, trailing unbeaten East Wilkes and second-place Wilkes Central in the standings.

In Elkin, the Lady Elks dropped their second match to Forbush on the year, 7-2 last Tuesday.

Julie Neumark picked up the lone singles win for Elkin, topping Carmen Wilkins 6-0, 7-6 (4). Elise Corrigan and Ally Gentry breezed to a 8-3 win in doubles play.

The Lady Elks bounced back with a 7-2 win over North Wilkes Monday.

Payton Nicholson and Neumark each swept their matches in straight sets, while Gentry and Sarah Myers picked up singles wins.

In doubles play, all three pairs won handily, 8-3, 8-5, 8-4, respectively, as Elkin improved to 5-10 on the year.
