The Carroll County Board of Supervisors will put out a request for proposals for a feasibility study for a pool and water park.

After hearing from several citizens about the need for a new county swimming pool or water park this summer, the board discussed options for such an endeavor during its August meeting. On Monday night, Supervisor Phil McCraw made the motion for Carroll to put a feasibility study out for bid.

“I think it would be a good thing for the board to put out an RFP for a feasibility study for a pool and waterpark for Carroll County and see what the feasibility study tells us,” McCraw said. “I think it would be a good way to approach it and get some professional help for this.”

Supervisor Bob Martin seconded the motion, which passed by a 5-1 vote. Laurel Fork District Supervisor Joshua Hendrick cast the lone no voting, saying he felt it was too early.

A facebook page developed in July titled, “Carroll County Citizens in favor of a Water Park/Pool,” has grown to 2,168 members. Additionally, a local group of concerned citizens has been meeting with Carroll County Tourism and Recreation Director Sam McLendon to discuss a water park/pool for Carroll County.

At the August meeting, McLendon talked to the board about visiting Randolph Park in Pulaski County. He had planned to bring back figures on revenues versus expenditures at that destination.

“I have no problems with a feasibility study, but since the group (in favor of a water park) has come before the board, I’m sure they’ve been working on this. I’d just be hesitant about doing one this early,” Hendrick said. “We are still waiting on the figures from Randolph Park and I think Mr. McLendon was going to look at revenues versus expenditures. Not that I don’t want to do it, but I think it is too early so I vote no.”
