A Vesta woman has been arrested and charged for numerous violations after a traffic stop Saturday.

According to Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner, Deputy Billy Johnson conducted a traffic stop Saturday of an Indiana-registered Nissan Altima on Route 58 near Gladesboro Road in Laurel Fork after observing a vehicle equipment violation. The vehicle matched the description of a suspicious vehicle in the Terry’s Mill Road area that had been reported to Carroll County dispatch over several previous days, Gardner said. The individual driving the vehicle was stopping at elderly residence homes and churches claiming to be destitute and asking for money.

A check of the vehicle’s license plate showed the vehicle had been stolen in Indianapolis, Indiana in June. The lone occupant of the vehicle, Heather Nicole Bell, age 24, of Vesta, was subsequently arrested and booked into the New River Valley Regional Jail on a charge of possession of a stolen vehicle, Gardner said. Bell was also found to be in possession of unlawful synthetic marijuana and paraphernalia and did not have a valid driver’s license.

Public involvement in this case alerted the Sheriff’s Office to a possible scam in the area and helped solve a crime. Citizens are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office in event of any suspicious activity at 728-4146 or 236-5119.
