Back to school shopping may put a dent in some parents’ wallets. But the first weekend in August is the time to save.
Parents, and thrifty shoppers, can save money with tax free weekend from Friday, August 3, to Sunday, August 5.
“The sales tax holiday is kind of like the day after Thanksgiving,” said director of the National Federation of Independent Business, Gregg Thompson. “It gets people fired up and puts them in the mood to shop, and that’s exactly what our economy needs right now.
Elkin’s Belk clothing store is gearing up for not only the tax free weekend, but also the Red Dot clearance sale which will be 40 to 50 percent off items.
“Our customers will typically be shopping for juniors clothing because of the assortment,” said Leon Baskerville of Elkin’s Belk. “If they don’t have to wear uniforms they will be shopping for glam tees, blazers, skinny jeans and bright colors.”
Items that will be tax free at Belk will include clothing and footwear but not accessories, Baskerville said.
The sale weekend will help North Carolina families during a recession, Thompson said.
“We will have huge discounts that weekend,” Baskerville said. “The company realizes this is a time where people will be looking for a good deal.”
